Images of Cambodia
There's a lot more hidden in Angkor Wat than meets the eye, as revealed recently. With a knowledgeable guide, there's much still to be discovered.
I was shown these heads in the jungle (miles from the famous Bayon), back in 2000.
Although I had permission to photograph here, and tried to make myself inconspicuous, (stayed in one place, no flash, no tripod, very quiet), the dance teacher made it plain that I was not really welcome in her class.
It was made very clear that the only way that more photos could be taken, would be upon the receipt of a large sum of US$. I would have loved to have taken more photos, but I took the hint and left.
Cambodia has had a tragic and painful past, and if you feel that you are not welcome somewhere, then it's most definitely time to get out, without asking questions.
An interesting article on Khmer dance, culture etc. here: Youthful Optimism
Unwilling at first to pose for a photo, a little gentle encouragement ensured a good portrait with a happy smile. I bought a drink of course!
The original photo included her companion; the final image has been heavily cropped.
